New to Slovakia? Survival Guide for Fresh Arrivals

Just arrived in Slovakia? I've been helping American soldiers get oriented for 3 years, and here's what you need to know in your first week.

First Day Essentials

Get a Slovak SIM card first – you'll need local data and calling. Orange and Telekom have English customer service. Most convenience stores sell prepaid cards, and activation is usually instant.

Money Matters

Slovakia uses the Euro, which makes life easier. ATMs are everywhere and most accept US cards. Tesco, Kaufland, and other big stores take cards, but smaller shops might be cash-only.

Grocery Shopping

Tesco and Kaufland are your best bets – they're like European Walmarts with familiar products and layout. Prices are generally lower than US, especially for local products. Many items have English labels or international brands you'll recognize.

Cultural Quick Tips

  • Slovaks are reserved but helpful once you approach them
  • "Ďakujem" (JAH-koo-yem) means "thank you"
  • "Prepáčte" (PREH-paach-teh) means "excuse me"
  • Tipping 10% at restaurants is standard
  • Shops close early on Sundays

Medical & Emergency

Emergency number: 112 (like 911). EU health cards work here, but check your military health coverage. Pharmacies are called "lekáreň" and are easy to find.

Getting Around Your First Week

Don't stress about buying a car immediately. We can show you around the area – where to shop, where to eat, important locations near your base. Think of it as an orientation tour with someone who speaks English and knows what newcomers need.

Banking

VÚB Bank and Slovenská sporiteľňa work well for internationals. Bring your passport, proof of address, and employment verification. Online banking is in English.

Local Attractions Worth Seeing

Once you're settled: Bojnice Castle (30 minutes away), Spiš Castle, and the High Tatras mountains for hiking. Slovakia has incredible nature and history – totally different from what most Americans expect.
